Ramsey County Historical Society (RCHS) is hosting Living la Vida in Ramsey County, an exhibit developed by Historian Leila Albert, to highlight the culture and history of the Mexican-Americans who have worked over the past century to build a flourishing community in the heart of Ramsey County. The exhibit is located in the RCHS Gallery in Landmark Center. Complimentary programs include a self-guided walking tour, a review of books with focus on Mexican-American history, and a series of presentations to highlight the historic events of the Mexican-American community. The exhibit and programs are free and open to the public.


The exhibit in the RCHS Exhibit Gallery on the first floor of Landmark Center gives an overview of the history and culture of Mexican-Americans in Ramsey County. The content of the exhibit will be in both Spanish and English. The exhibit begins September 22, 2011 with an opening event at 6 p.m., and runs through August 12, 2012.
Ramsey County History, the award winning quarterly magazine published by Ramsey County Historical Society, features Mexican-Americans in Ramsey County in volume 46, number 3.
A self-guided walking tour through St. Paul’s West Side will offer area visitors and residents an opportunity to see places featuring local artwork of Mexican-American history and culture in Ramsey County. Self-guided tour brochures will be available in both Spanish and in English and will be available at Landmark Center, West Side businesses, area libraries, and on the Ramsey County Historical Society website www.rchs.com.

Living la Vida complimentary programswill begin October 20 with a presentation and discussion by Leila Albert focused on how a Mexican-American community came to be situated in Ramsey County. On November 10 there will be a History Talk regarding repatriation in Ramsey County. Watch for announcements of more events coming spring 2012.
Guest Curator, Leila Albert, a local historian with expertise in Mexican-American history, led the research program, completed research for the exhibit, managed collaboration with the community, developed and designed gallery displays, and organized the series of history discussions that will occur over the course of the exhibition, Living la Vida in Ramsey County.
RCHS Curator/Archivist, Mollie Spillman, consulted on the research, exhibition, and final content of the exhibition, Living la Vida in Ramsey County.
RCHS acts as host of this exhibit and programming telling these important stories about Ramsey County’s past.
The mission of Ramsey County Historical Society is to inspire current and future generations to learn from and value their history by engaging in a diverse program of presenting, publishing and preserving.

Ramsey County is home to a large and growing Mexican-American population whose history and culture has been increasingly a part of Ramsey County heritage.
